BLACK WIDOW
Main Titles - Direction + Design + Animation
UI - Direction + Design + Animation
For Black Widow's first solo outing, our team at Perception was asked to develop the unique technology of The Red Room, the evil organization that turned Natasha Romanoff into the Black Widow, as well as tell the entire backstory of Natasha from the 1990s to present day with an opening title sequence.
The opening titles for Black Widow are designed to retell the story of Natasha's journey from a teen in the 1990s to the Black Widow in the present day. Director Cate Shortland wanted the sequence to feel raw and authentic, like it could fit within a documentary, so we created a sequence that felt like it was created entirely with found footage. This meant that our team at Perception joined the filmmakers on set to capture these moments with access to sets, props, locations, and actors.
A behind-the-scenes look at the entire process.
Like much of the technology in the MCU, the Red Room’s tech is futuristic, yet it carries a distinctly retro flair. To underscore that their technology is somewhat trapped in the past, we designed the holograms to appear as if they’re projected from physical devices, adding a tactile, old-school touch. The interfaces frequently glitch, suggesting aging or imperfect technology, while the overall design is starkly utilitarian, focused purely on function over form. Muted, monochromatic color schemes dominate, reinforcing the impression of a system that’s efficient but dated, as if it’s still catching up to the present.
